Mozart/Lachenmann – Faster than Beauty

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Serenade in B KV 361 (370a) ›Gran Partita‹ (1781)
Helmut Lachenmann: Concertini, Musik für Ensemble (2005)
Ensemble Modern, Franck Ollu (Leitung)

Hessischer Rundfunk, hr-Sendesaal

W. A. Mozart opens each movement of his ›Gran Partita‹ with simple musical figures, only to immediately unmask them as old-fashioned and transform them into music anew. Helmut Lachenmann does nothing else when he breaks open musical elements and places them in a new context with »playful seriousness«. Thus, a concert grand piano may sound like a guiro and a violin like a match being struck. These phenomena can be studied in their full impressiveness in the large-scale ensemble work ›Concertini‹, which unleashes a competition between the instrumental groups – in the spirit of the original meaning of the term »concert«.
