›Die Weber‹. Film Concert

Johannes Kalitzke: ›Die Weber‹. Musical cycle accompanying the silent film of the same name by F. Zelnik (2012)
Ensemble Modern, Johannes Kalitzke (diretor)

Staatstheater Darmstadt, Großer Saal

Expressing the tensions in Weimar Republic society, Friedrich Zelnik hit a nerve of his times with his 1927 movie ›Die Weber‹ (›The Weavers‹). To this day, this film version of Gerhart Hauptmann’s drama of the same name about the uprising of the weavers in 1844 is considered one of the best Hauptmann adaptations ever. For the newly restored version of the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, Johannes Kalitzke has created an advanced and extremely felicitous example of the fruitful dialogue between historical art film and contemporary music: it adds a critical, questioning musical layer containing the dialectic of resistance.

Commissioned jointly by the Augsburg Theater, Augsburg Philharmonic, Konzerthaus Vienna, Wien Modern and Ensemble Modern.
