Staatstheater Darmstadt

The Darmstadt State Theatre is a four-genre house, staging opera, dance, drama and concerts. Its current building, designed by architect Rolf Prange, houses approximately 550 staff members, four performance venues and the workshops, all under one roof. The Darmstadt State Theatre celebrated its 200-year anniversary in 2010. Following the modernisation from 2003 to 2006, its stage technology is among the most modern in Europe. The Main Hall, used mainly for opera performances, has 956 seats; the Small Hall, hosting mainly drama and dance performances, seats 482. The Chamber Hall offers another 120 seats, and the Chamber Hall’s Bar with its capacity of 60 also regularly hosts events. The artistic and executive director is the internationally renowned opera director Karsten Wiegand, who assumed his position with the 2014/15 season. Tim Plegge is ballet director and chief choreographer; Jonas Zipf directs the drama department; Will Humburg is general music director.
