About the seminar
The International Composition Seminar of the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA), made possible through financing by the Allianz Kulturstiftung since 2004, is still a unique project worldwide. The seminar offers composers and conductors a unique opportunity to develop a piece within a professional and international context. With their many years of experience as instrumentalists, the members of the Ensemble Modern provide invaluable support to four to six young composers in their creative process. During the first »try-out« phase, composers can experiment with and develop their compositional ideas in conjunction with the musicians. In a second phase the complete pieces are then thoroughly rehearsed and performed. This two-part opportunity of working together has remained unique to this day. Since 2011, the International Composition Seminar has been integrated into the festival ›cresc... Biennale für Moderne Musik Frankfurt Rhein Main‹, a fact that offers the additional possibility of more sustainable dissemination of the resulting compositions.
The thematic idea of the 7th International Composition Seminar, held for the first time in cooperation with the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in 2015, is ›Music-Film Image-Music‹. Selected composers and graduates of the Film Academy create new »music film works« with the Ensemble Modern musicians led by Johannes Kalitzke. The four composers selected by a jury following a pan-European application process, the four graduates of the Film Academy and Ensemble Modern first met in January 2015. At the end of this first »try-out«, four teams were formed, whose ideas were evaluated (discussed) by a team of advisors and then examined during the next working phase in June with a view to content, technical and practical performance issues. In November, the »music films« will be rehearsed during a final rehearsal phase and given their world premieres. What answers will the teams have found to the complex aesthetic, stylistic and technical questions resulting from this constellation? Which paths do they take, how far do they venture into the realm of the risky and unknown, the shrill and experimental?
